A great deal of specialist healthcare in this state happens in one city. For families in the Wheatbelt, the South West, the Mid West or the Goldfields, that means a long trip for an appointment that lasts twenty minutes. For a wheelchair user, very few of the usual options work.

Coaches and trains have limited accessible capacity and rigid timetables. Flying with a powered chair introduces real risk of damage and a hire car isn't accessible. A pre-booked accessible vehicle door to door is often simply the most practical answer.

A long accessible journey is a logistics exercise. Getting it right is mostly about asking the right questions before anyone gets in the vehicle.

Rest stops that work

We plan breaks around your needs and identify stops with genuinely accessible toilets in advance, rather than discovering the problem two hundred kilometres in.

Seating and pressure care

Posture, tilt and pressure relief matter far more over four hours than four kilometres. Tell us how you sit and we'll plan the journey around it.

For the far north we'll usually tell you a flight with accessible ground transport at each end is the better answer. A quote you don't take beats a trip that wasn't sensible.

PATS

Country patients: check the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme first

If you live in country WA and you're travelling to Perth for specialist care, there is a state scheme that may subsidise part of this trip. It's badly under-claimed, and no transport company is going to volunteer it, so here it is.

What PATS covers and who qualifies

The Patient Assisted Travel Scheme, run by the WA Country Health Service, subsidises travel and accommodation for permanent residents of a country health region (the Goldfields, Great Southern, Kimberley, Midwest, Pilbara, South West and Wheatbelt) who must travel more than 100 km each way to reach the nearest appropriate specialist.

There's a lower threshold for renal and cancer treatment, where limited assistance is available from 70 km each way. You need to be eligible for Medicare, and subsidies can extend to a support person travelling with you. Additional assistance may apply if you live more than 30 km from your town centre.

It's a subsidy, not a reimbursement

PATS is explicit that the subsidies are not intended to cover the full cost of travel. You're responsible for the difference between the subsidy and what the trip actually costs. That matters when accessible transport is the only option available to you, because it's rarely the cheapest one.

What we can do is give you a written, itemised quote and receipt with the date, route and distance clearly set out, so whatever you claim is straightforward to submit. Talk to the PATS officer at your regional hospital before you travel rather than after, because approval usually needs to be arranged in advance.

Combining it with other funding

NDIS participants with transport funding may be able to use it for the journey, and PTSS applies to metered taxi work rather than long-distance charter, so it generally won't help on a country run. If you're unsure which applies, tell us the trip and who funds you and we'll set out what we know before you commit.

What it costs

Fares, PTSS and NDIS funding

Metro trips run on the WA Government maximum metered rates with no accessibility surcharge, and pre-booked journeys can be quoted as a fixed price. A purple PTSS card pays 75% of the fare, up to a $35 subsidy, when you travel in your wheelchair in a wheelchair accessible taxi.
